Description
A broad-spectrum anthelmintic agent indicated for the treatment of intestinal helminth infections. It acts by inhibiting glucose uptake and microtubule function in susceptible parasites, resulting in impaired energy production and eventual parasite death.
INDICATIONS
Mebendazole is indicated for the treatment of the following parasitic infections:
- Ascariasis (roundworm)
- Trichuriasis (whipworm)
- Ancylostomiasis and necatoriasis (hookworm infections)
- Enterobiasis (pinworm)
- Mixed intestinal helminth infections, based on clinical assessment
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
- Dosage and duration of therapy are determined by the type of infection and the patient’s clinical condition.
- To be taken as prescribed or advised by a licensed physician.
- May be taken with or without food, unless otherwise directed.
- Repeat dosing or prolonged use should only be undertaken upon medical advice.
ADVERSE REACTIONS
Mebendazole is generally well tolerated when used appropriately.
COMMON ADVERSE REACTION:
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhea
- Nausea or vomiting
- Headache
LESS COMMON OR RARE ADVERSE REACTIONS:
- Dizziness
- Cutaneous reactions (rash, pruritus)
- Transient elevation of hepatic enzymes, particularly with prolonged use
- Reversible alopecia (rare, associated with long-term or high-dose therapy)
Patients should be advised to seek medical attention in the event of severe or persistent adverse effects.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION:
- Mebendazole 500 mg is available as an over-the-counter (OTC) medication; however, its use is recommended under the supervision or guidance of a physician to ensure accurate diagnosis, appropriate dosing, and treatment monitoring.
- Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment.
- Not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy unless the potential benefit outweighs the risk.
- Patients should inform their healthcare provider of any underlying medical conditions or concomitant medications.
For safe and effective use, medical supervision is advised despite OTC availability.
