Description
Indications
Used for the treatment of infections caused by common intestinal parasites (worms) in both adults and children. It is specifically indicated for:
-
Pinworm or Threadworm (Enterobius vermicularis)
-
Roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides)
-
Hookworm (Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus)
-
Trichostrongylus (Trichostrongylus colubriformis and orientalis)
Dosage and Administration
The dosage is determined based on body weight (11 mg of pyrantel base per kg of body weight).
-
Administration: Take as a single dose, with or without food, at any time of the day. The tablets may be crushed and mixed with food or milk if necessary for children.
-
Repeat Dose: For pinworms, a second dose is often recommended 2 to 4 weeks after the initial treatment to ensure any newly hatched worms are eliminated.
Adverse Reactions
Pyrantel embonate is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, which limits systemic side effects. However, some may experience:
-
Gastrointestinal: Abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite.
-
Central Nervous System: Headache, dizziness, or drowsiness.
-
Dermatological: Mild skin rash or itching.
Important Safety Precautions
-
Treat the Whole Household: Since pinworms are highly contagious and easily spread, it is recommended to treat all members of the household simultaneously to prevent re-infection.
-
Hygiene Measures: To supplement treatment, maintain strict hygiene: wash hands and fingernails frequently, launder bed linens and towels in hot water, and vacuum living areas.
-
Pre-existing Conditions: Use with caution in patients with pre-existing liver dysfunction, as transient elevations in liver enzymes may occur.
-
Pregnancy and Nursing: Consult a healthcare professional before use. While generally considered low-risk due to poor absorption, it should only be used if clearly needed.
-
Contraindications: Do not use if you have a known hypersensitivity to pyrantel embonate or any of the tablet’s ingredients.
