Description

Indications

Used as a mucolytic to help relieve cough with phlegm. It is indicated for:

  • Cough with Phlegm: Reducing the viscosity (thickness) of mucus to make it easier to cough up and clear from the airways.

  • Respiratory Disorders: Relief of symptoms associated with excessive or sticky mucus in conditions such as acute and chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, and bronchiectasis.

  • Adjunct Therapy: Often used alongside other treatments for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or middle ear infections (otitis media) with effusion.

Dosage and Administration

  • Adults and Children 12 years and over:

    • Take 1 capsule (500 mg) every 8 hours (three times a day).

  • Administration: Swallow the capsule whole with a full glass of water.

  • With Food: It is best taken after a meal to minimize potential gastric irritation.

  • Hydration: Increasing your daily water intake while taking mucolytics is highly recommended to help further thin the mucus and facilitate clearing.

Adverse Reactions

Carbocisteine is generally well-tolerated. However, some individuals may experience:

  • Gastrointestinal: Nausea, stomach discomfort, diarrhea, or gastrointestinal bleeding (rare).

  • Central Nervous System: Dizziness, headache, or palpitations.

  • Dermatological: Skin rashes, itching, or hives.

  • Other: A dry mouth or a feeling of warmth (flushing).

Important Safety Precautions

  • Stomach Ulcer Warning: Use with extreme caution if you have a history of gastric or duodenal ulcers, as mucolytics may disrupt the gastric mucosal barrier.

  • Persistent Cough: If the cough lasts for more than 10 days, or is accompanied by high fever, persistent headache, or skin rash, consult a physician immediately.

  • Drug Interactions: There are no known significant drug interactions with Carbocisteine, but it should not be taken with antitussives (cough suppressants) like codeine or dextromethorphan, as suppressing the cough reflex prevents the expulsion of the thinned mucus.

  • Pregnancy and Nursing: Consult a healthcare professional before use. While not known to be harmful, it should only be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding if the benefits outweigh the potential risks.

  • Storage: Store at temperatures not exceeding 30°C. Keep the capsules in their original blister pack, protected from direct sunlight and moisture.
