Description

Indications

Used for the treatment of infections caused by common intestinal parasites (worms) in adults and children. It is highly effective against:

• Pinworm or Threadworm

• Common Roundworm

• Hookworm

• Trichostrongylus

Dosage and Administration

The dosage is based on body weight (11 mg of pyrantel base per kg of body weight). For a standard 125 mg/5 mL suspension, the following guide applies:

• Administration: Shake the bottle well before use. Take as a single dose, with or without food, at any time of the day. It can be mixed with milk or fruit juice if preferred.

• Repeat Dose: For pinworms, a second dose is often recommended 2 to 4 weeks after the initial treatment to ensure complete elimination of newly hatched worms.

Adverse Reactions

Pyrantel embonate is poorly absorbed from the gut, which minimizes systemic side effects. However, some may experience:

• Gastrointestinal: Abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite.

• Central Nervous System: Headache, dizziness, or drowsiness.

• Dermatological: Mild skin rash or itching.

• Other: Transient increase in liver enzymes (rare).

Important Safety Precautions

• Family Treatment: Since pinworms are highly contagious, it is best to treat the entire household at the same time to prevent re-infection.

• Hygiene Measures: Complement treatment by washing hands and fingernails frequently, laundering bed linens in hot water, and vacuuming common areas.

• Pre-existing Conditions: Use with caution in patients with liver dysfunction, as it may cause a transient elevation in liver enzymes.

• Pregnancy and Nursing: Consult a healthcare professional before use. While generally considered low-risk due to poor absorption, use only if clearly necessary.

• Storage: Store at temperatures not exceeding 30°C. Keep the bottle tightly closed and protected from direct light.
