Adverse Reactions
Mebendazole is generally well-tolerated because very little is absorbed into the bloodstream from the gut. However, some may experience:
-
Gastrointestinal: Transient abdominal pain, diarrhea, flatulence, or nausea (especially in cases of heavy parasite infestation).
-
Central Nervous System: Rare instances of dizziness or headache.
-
Dermatological: Very rare allergic reactions such as rash, hives, or itching.
-
Serious Reactions (Rare): Neutropenia (low white blood cell count) or liver function disturbances with prolonged high-dose use.
Important Safety Precautions
-
Hygiene Protocol: To prevent re-infection, it is essential to wash hands and fingernails frequently, launder bedding and towels in hot water, and treat all members of the household at the same time.
-
Age Restriction: Generally not recommended for children under 2 years of age unless specifically directed by a pediatrician, as there have been rare reports of convulsions in this age group.
-
Pregnancy and Nursing: Mebendazole should be avoided during the first trimester of pregnancy as it has shown embryotoxic effects in animal studies. Consult a healthcare professional if nursing.
-
Drug Interactions: Concurrent use with Cimetidine may inhibit the metabolism of mebendazole in the liver, potentially increasing its plasma concentration. Avoid use with Metronidazole due to the risk of Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis.
-
Liver Health: Use with caution in patients with known hepatic impairment.
