-
Central Nervous System: Dizziness, drowsiness, or tiredness.
-
Dermatological: Rare instances of skin rash or itching.
-
Serious Reactions (Rare): Severe abdominal bloating (distention) or toxic megacolon (especially in patients with specific inflammatory conditions).
Important Safety Precautions
-
Hydration is Key: Loperamide treats the symptoms of diarrhea, not the cause. It is critical to replace lost fluids and electrolytes (using oral rehydration salts or water) to prevent dehydration, especially in children and the elderly.
-
Infectious Diarrhea Warning: Do not use if diarrhea is accompanied by a high fever (above 38.5°C) or if there is blood or mucus in the stool (dysentery). These may be signs of a bacterial infection that requires different medical treatment.
-
Heart Safety Alert: Do not exceed the recommended dose. Taking more than directed can cause serious heart rhythm problems or even death.
-
Abdominal Conditions: Avoid use if you have acute ulcerative colitis or pseudomembranous colitis associated with broad-spectrum antibiotics.
-
Drowsiness/Dizziness: Exercise caution when driving or operating machinery until you know how the medication affects you.
-
Pregnancy and Nursing: Consult a healthcare professional before use. Loperamide is not recommended for nursing mothers as small amounts may be excreted in breast milk.
